The Ten Best Mascaras

1. Too Faced - £12.50

For rock-chick lashes, Lash Injection from Too Faced is just the ticket. The huge wand takes a little getting used to, but it loads up eyelashes with colour and the "hot chocolate" shade that we tested was extremely flattering.

2. Kanebo - £14.95
Formulated to stay firmin the face of sweat, tears and humidity, this mascara washes off in 38C water without make-up remover. It goes on easily thanks to its dinky brush and is defiantly un-clumpy.

3. Lancome L’Extreme - £18.50
Gives a great length to the lash without any clumpiness, although people looking for a fat lash should go elsewhere. It doesn’t flake at all and is very durable, but that did mean our tester needed something quite industrial to remove it – and that wasn’t even the waterproof version.

4. YSL - £19
This eduringly popular brand comes in loads of colours – including a rather lovely racing green – and makes lashes noticeably thicker and curled. YSL’s Volume Infin Curl may be pricey but it’s still the best of the bunch.

5. Jemma Kidd Lash Tint - £12
While some tints are inky, Jemma Kidd’s semi-permanent version has the texture of a lash-building mascara. Plus it didn’t budge after a day of skiing and survived a swimming session, too. Great for sporty types.

6. Maxfactor - £8.99
Thanks to its “IFX” brushmade from tiny silicon fronds, Maxfactor’s Masterpiece goes on like a dream. “It makes it easy to reach even tiny lashes,” says our tester. Agreat all-rounder.

7. MAC - £10
While some testers found MAC’s offering a little underwhelming, others loved its lengthening ability and the fact it doesn’t clump. Just the thing for a natural look, but not bold enough for drama queens.

8. Bad Gal - £14.50
According to one tester, this “makes your eyelashes about four times as long and thick as they are naturally”. Great packaging also makes it really luxurious to use. It’s also available in an eye-brightening blue shade.

9. Clinique Lash Power - £12.50

10. Maybelline - £8.99
Although Maybelline’s classic mascara is always a winner, XXL Curl Power is also excellent, especially if you are cursed with thin lashes.Although applying a white and then a black coat is a bit of a pain, it genuinely gives lashes a big boost.
