The 50 Best Furniture Shops

21 June 2008, Chosen by Kate Watson-Smyth

"Steeped in history, this establishment provides a perfect forum for art and design from the past 200 years" says Simon Alderson. "This is one of the few antique dealers that provides a highly informed platform for postwar British design, offering a unique blend and quality that should not be missed." More than just paintings, which you might assume, this is the place to come for a 19th-century chafing dish or a Dutch oven - should that be your desire. It specialises in British art and design from the 17th century, and has been sited here since its foundation in 1876.

The 50 Best Summer Reads

14 June 2008, Chosen by Katy Guest, Tim Walker, Arifa Akbar, Rebecca Armstrong, Simon Usborne and John Walsh

Despite the "supermodel" author's denials, this book is obviously quite autobiographical - not least because Dahl's lead character is devastatingly beautiful. Our heroine's mother is a real "bolter", and this tale chronicles how her family cope with such a feckless matriarch. The start and end, set in the present day, are a little nauseating, but the rest is really entertaining and amusingly written.

The 50 Best Bookshops

24 May 2008, Chosen by Tim Walker

"Crockatt and Powell is run by two really bright guys called Matthew Crockatt and Adam Powell, who are refugees from the big chains," says Joel Rickett. "It feels clean and fresh and alive, unlike many bookshops that get overstocked with dead stock. They don't discount, and they don't sell the mass-market bestsellers at all. Every time I go in I seem to come away with something I didn't even know about before. They don't have any real sections, it's all willy-nilly, which helps that sense of discovery."

The 50 Best Household Appliances

17 May 2008

Dyson's bagless vacuum cleaners are powerful thanks to Root cyclone technology. They're also easy to empty and the lack of bags make them cheaper to run aswell. This Stowaway Animal cylinder model has a system where the hose wraps around the body to pack away neatly and the motor in the brush head removes extra dirt and is especially good on pet hair. All full-size Dysons come with a five-year guarantee and are noticeably more stylish than most vacuum cleaners.
