The Five Best Canadian Boutique B&Bs

1. A Banff Boutique Inn, Alberta

The Rockies may be on the doorstep, but this smart B&B shows there's more to Canadian mountain style than lumberjack shirts and chaps. The Inn is a 10-room lodge that's full of character, with king-size beds and plenty of cosy nooks and crannies in which to curl up and read. If guests get tired of mountain-biking, hiking or elk-watching in the national park, they can take a soak in the rooms' Jacuzzi baths.

A Banff Boutique Inn, 121 Cave Avenue, Banff, Alberta (001 403 762 4636; www.banffboutiqueinn.com). B&B starts at C$150 (£74).

2. Villa Marco Polo Inn, Victoria
This 1923 mansion, built in the style of an Italian palazzo, even has a Tuscan ornamental garden. The attention to detail is impressive: from vegan meals to hypoallergenic bedlinen.
Villa Marco Polo Inn, 1524 Shasta Place, Victoria, Vancouver Island, British Columbia (001 250 370 1524; www.villamarcopolo.com). B&B from C$190 (£93)

3. Auberge Les Passants, Montréal
This former warehouse in the heart of the city dates from 1723. The nine rooms, with stripped wood floors, stone walls and beamed ceilings, have a flavour of rural France. The leather furniture and brass beds add a touch of grandeur, while a collection of rather serious-looking antiques is softened by linen and lace trimmings. Amenities such as Wi-Fi lend a resolutely contemporary touch.
Auberge Les Passants du Sans Soucy, 171 rue St-Paul Ouest, Vieux-Montréal, Québec (001 514 842 2634; www.lesanssoucy.com). B&B starts at C$120 (£59).

4. Barclay House, Vancouver
With its white veranda and classical columns, Barclay House is a model of colonial style. Although it’s in the middle of downtown, this 1904 town house has the feel of a less hurried age. Appropriately for Canada’s foodie capital, breakfasts are three-course blow-outs.
Barclay House, 1351 Barclay Street, Vancouver, British Columbia (001 604 605 1351; www.barclayhouse.com). B&B starts at C$155 (£76).

5. 100 Acres & An Ox, Nova Scotia
The 100 acres here refers to the lush meadows, lakes and forest surrounding this four-bed clapboard B&B in Lunenburg County’s Union Square. The rooms are traditionally furnished; romantics will gravitate towards the Rose Room, with its lake-view balcony. Guests can pound hiking trails, watch whales or go fishing. That’s if they can drag themselves away from the cooking of the Paris-trained chef.
100 Acres & An Ox Country Inn, Barss Corner, Nova Scotia (001 902 644 3913; www.novascotiabedandbreakfast.com). B&B starts at C$125 (£61).
